"This monumental collection portrays the Ottoman Empire during the reign of one of its last sultans, Abdul-Hamid II. The 1,819 photographs in 51 large-format albums date from about 1880 to 1893. They highlight the modernization of numerous aspects of the Ottoman Empire, featuring images of educational facilities and students; well-equipped army and navy personnel and facilities; technologically advanced lifesaving and fire fighting brigades; factories; mines; harbors; hospitals; and government buildings. Most of the places depicted are within the boundaries of modern-day Turkey, but buildings and sites in Iraq, Lebanon, Greece and other countries are also included.”

Part of a series of 120 primarily glass slides taken by Joe Buchanan's father, Robert Earle Buchanan, a professor of Agriculture at Iowa State University, on trips to the Middle East in 1946 and 1949. In the Comar Arabians collection of Garth and Joe Buchanan. Now held by Carolyn and Dick Hasbrook, Twinbrook Arabians, Ames, Iowa.

This photo was taken 11/6/1945  at the Walter Ross Arabian farm near Kansas City. The mare was ridden by the Ross trainer, Harry Thomas. It was to be used in an article by Margaret Bechtel for Kansas City AP about the Ross farm in Missouri. There are few photos of *Azja IV, who was famed for her son Azraff, by *Raffles.

Carolyn Hasbrook furnished these photos of her first farm tour to look at Arabian horses in 1968. The Hasbrooks are a pillar of the Azraff-Ferzon breeding community.
